Today we're talking containers. There's a lot of hype around containers these days. Let's talk about what they are and why they're important to modern enterprise organizations.

The dictionary describes a container as something that's used to transport something else like an Amazon box is used to deliver a new pair of suits.
Check out the container overview: https://tanzu.vmware.com/containers

In the software world containers are used to transport applications from one environment to another containers look and operate similar to virtual machines, virtual machines virtualized hardware by running several VMs on one server containers virtualize the operating system.

This means that containers share one operating system when virtual machines each have their own by sharing an operating system containers become super lightweight quickly to deploy, and use fewer resources than even a virtual machine, therefore they're a favorite of the developer community.
Why containers? Build it once and move it anywhere!
Now you may be wondering, are containers competitive or complimentary to virtual machines?

The answer is that they're very complimentary virtual machines and containers address different virtualization needs so it's quite possible for a VM, to be supporting a workload architected using container technology in the last few years VMware entered the container market by partnering on our first solution with Pivotal, and will continue to deliver the container solutions and services that support our customers businesses.
